Conductive Keratoplasty
Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) is superior to other LASER surgeries in correcting refractive disorders like Hyperopia and presbyopia in particular. The sophisticated surgical procedure takes the help of the "controlled-release" radiofrequency energy that heats up the anterior surface of the cornea and reshapes it (by contraction of collagen) gently. The unilateral application of this heat therapeutic treatment of re-shaping the cornea actually helps to improve low to moderate degrees of myopia. Conductive Keratoplasty is an effective treatment for correcting presbyopia and usually yields a stable and predictable long-term result within 3 years of surgery. Furthermore, clinical evidence confirms that individuals are likely to achieve quality vision as well as any untreated natural vision. Conductive Keratoplasty is safe for individuals aged 40 years and above. It provides the best spectacle corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) to the hyperopic candidates. According to the FDA findings, this treatment proves effective in reducing the spherical hyperopia between +0.75 D to +3.25 D of Cycloplegic spherical hyperopia plus -0.75 D or less of refractive astigmatism. The outcome is +0.75 D to +3.00 D cycloplegic spherical equivalent in the post-surgical period. Usually, Conductive Keratoplasty does not give rise to serious contraindications like other LASER surgeries. Some common complications are glares, halos, corneal scarring and occurrences of eye infection. Ophthalmologists need to be very careful and go through a series of initial evaluation tests before selecting patients with vision disorders. Conductive Keratoplasty can be done on patients above 21 years of age, having healthy cornea with corrected binocular vision and no previous record of medical implants. They should be tolerant for monovision as well. Sometimes, with the progress in presbyopia, some additional surgeries and enhancement treatments may be imperative. |
