Late Postoperative Complications
Late Postoperative complications include complications which occur long after the surgery. There have been cases which have been reported even 7 years after surgery. After surgery patients are told all about post operative care and its importance so as to avoid Eye Complications at a later date but even after all the efforts some patients tend to develop problems after the surgery. Post operation medication is administered to the patients and they are also advised longer duration of sleep and wearing of goggles so as to protect the eyes. Some patients develop these complications due to neglect in the post operative days and some others have it because of complications in the surgery and due to various other factors.
- Although Late Postoperative Complications are rare, there have been at least 0.1% of cases that have been reported for epithelial ingrowths.
- Another reported late post operative complication for LASIK patients is Glare.
- Starbursts and halos are also Late Postoperative Complications and these are seen around lights at night time. This complication is because of the abnormality that exists in the operated part and part that is not operated. It's not advisable to perform the surgery in such a manner where the entire pupil is covered when fully dilated at night time and with the expansion of the pupil the light is able to pass through the rim of the flap. During the day the size of the pupil is less than the edge. The latest technology is more suited for people who have pupils that are large. This has to be identified at the time of the pre-operative examination.
- Traumatic flap dislocation cases have been reported even after several years after the LASIK surgery. Although such instances are very rare there have been cases of that sort that have come to light.
