LASIK Doctor

LASIK is a surgery that requires high degree of expertise. The first appointment with a good LASIK Doctor would and should be quite an enriching experience. Some things which are usually undertaken before LASIK surgery by a good doctor are as below.

  • A video which shows the entire LASIK procedure would help in creating more awareness about the surgery.
  • Talking to the staff and the surgeon about the surgery would certainly help matters. The doctors would explain what exactly would be the outcome of the surgery. Many patients go on with unrealistic expectations which later create problems. The LASIK Surgeon ensures that the patient is given a clear understanding of the procedure and what to expect.
  • A discussion on the cost of the surgery is very important. The patient can also have an insight into the finance options that are made available to undergo the surgery.

Various eye examinations related to the eyes are undertaken to get a good picture of the situation.

  • Topography: It is the test which determines the cornea shape indicating its health. This test helps in determining if the patient has Keratoconus in which case the cornea will not be in the usual spherical shape but would be conical.
  • Pachymetry: The thickness of the cornea is tested with this test as this would establish if there is sufficient tissue and if a flap can be cut for the purpose of the surgery.
  • Determining Size of The Pupil: Pupils which measure 7 millimeters or more in width are not considered suitable for LASIK surgery.
  • Vision Prescription: Usually done without glasses or contact lens and later done with it. A lens meter is at times used as aid to determine the prescription.
  • Determining The Dominant Eye: This is done especially if monovision LASIK is opted for. In which case one eye has a vision of 20/20 for distant viewing and the other eye is better for nearsightedness. This method is usually used so that the use of reading glasses can be delayed at a later stage in life.

Certain Things That the Patients Need to be Made Aware Of:

  • The cornea shape changes with constant use of contact lens. The pressure applied by the lens affects the cornea. If measurements for LASIK Eye Surgery is taken before the cornea gets back to its original shape, it will create problems at a later stage.
  • Contact lens also affects the percentage of oxygen that is received by the eye. If the eye does not receive oxygen in sufficient measure newer blood vessels which are abnormal can erupt. Usually the cornea does not have blood vessels and this development can actually become a problem during cutting of the flap.
  • The correct curvature of the cornea can be measured by taking a measurement initially and after a short wait another measurement would determine if there has been any change.

All this information would actually help you be in a better position when talking to your LASIK Doctor about LASIK and the procedure involved.
