LASIK
LASIK, the acronym for Laser in situ Keratomileusis, is a vision correcting surgical procedure. It is capable of eliminating complications that arise due to Myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (far sightedness) and astigmatism. In other words, it could also be considered an alternative for spectacles and contact lenses. Getting into detail about the word “LASIK”; it denotes the utilization of laser to reshape corneal tissues without affecting the neighboring tissues. The term “Keratomileusis” is derived from the Greek word “kerato” referring to “cornea” and “mileusis” meaning to “reshape”. “In situ” is again a Greek derivative, which means “in typical or normal pace”. In the medical arena, this term means that it is confined to a specific spot of origin without invading adjacent tissues. LASIK is performed in an Excimer Laser surgical suite. The procedure usually lasts for 30 minutes and it is possible to perform surgery on both of the eyes at the same time. A topical anesthesia is administered to the patient that is used for making the eye numb for the surgical procedure. The first step is to place a suction ring on the eye. This helps in securing the eye and maintaining the pressure while creating a corneal flap. A microkeratome is the microsurgical instrument that is used to fabricate the corneal flap. Throughout the eye surgery, the flap remains hinged underneath the upper eyelid. In the second step, the flap is laid back. The corneal layers of inner stroma are subjected to laser according to the patient's prescription. Ultra violet rays that originate from the Excimer Laser reshape the internal cornea. The refractive power of the cornea is thus altered, thereby eliminating the error. Next, the flap is repositioned. Once these procedures are completed, the eye surgeon takes a few minutes to ensure that the corneal flap is properly re-adhered. Patients are allowed to blink normally at this stage. The procedure is becoming quite popular because of the ease and speed in which it is performed. A faster recovery period and improved comfort and safety also effectively contribute to the recognition of LASIK. Custom Vue LASIK Intra LASIK Epi LASIK Excimer Laser |
