Epi LASIKEpithelial Laser In Situ Keratomileusis - Epi-LASIK is the abbreviation used for an advanced form of LASIK surgical procedure where the epithelial layer of the cornea is separated by means of a sophisticated "no-sharp" separator known as the epikeratome. Then the laser treatment is done on the Bowman's layer and finally the epithelial flap is replaced onto the earlier corneal position. Epi-LASIK is a refractive error correcting LASER Surgery of personal choice which is performed on candidates usually having high degrees of myopia or those who are suffering from thinning of the cornea or post-operative flap repositioning complications or high incidence of dry eyes after any other Excimer laser surgery. Epi-LASIK has brought in new hopes for people who are otherwise unsuitable for LASIK surgeries. Due to its "no-cut" solution for long-lasting, stable vision correction, it claims to affect patient recovery with least numbers of post-operative complications as well as results in faster healing without pain and further reduction in visual acuity. Epi-LASIK uses the photo-ablation technology that effectively repositions the epithelial layer of the cornea after the operation and further protects it from any threat of damage by covering it with a "bandaged" soft contact lens for some days after the surgery. The rapid re-epithelialization process reduces the risks of eye infection and corneal haze to significant extents. Sometimes, mitomycin is used on the eyes to speed up the rate of healing. Epi-LASIK is also believed to be the safest corneal laser surgical procedures. It is preferred to other traditional Excimer Laser procedures because the former does not deteriorate the structural integrity of the cornea. When compared to LASIK, LASEK and PRK, it is observed that the new treatment allows a faster visual recovery, within 3-4 days in normal cases. In addition, clinical reports also confirm that the Epi-LASIK gives stable vision within 3 months. Furthermore, the success rate for achieving 20/40 or better vision is more than 50 per cent after surgery. The safety of Epi-LASIK is appreciable too. |
