LASEKLaser Epithelial Keratomileusis (LASEK) is quite similar to the LASIK and PRK techniques which involve surface remodeling of cornea for vision correction. LASEK, as one of the Excimer Laser techniques uses a combination of trephine blade and a 20% dilute alcohol-based solution which together helps to obtain an intact hinge and also preserves the outer surface layer (epithelium) of the cornea as a right kind of flap during the surgery. After the cornea is gently reshaped, this epithelium flap is replaced. LASEK is believed to be a more comfortable surgical process when compared to the PRK and LASIK and it reports better and faster post-operative healing as well. Usually, a special "bandage" contact lens is placed on the eye for 3-4 days after the surgery which allows the surface to heal successfully. Patients undergone LASEK surgery also experience lower incidence of corneal haze, dry eyes and pains during the post operative periods. A good functional vision may be achieved within a week and the stability of vision is obtained between one month and 3 months in normal cases. LASEK is, by and large, recommended for patients having low or moderate levels of Hyperopia. In some case studies, it is observed that LASEK is also a safe and effective Laser Surgical Treatment for low to moderate myopia, but may lead to increase in contrast sensitivity in myopic patients at times. There are some crucial but temporary side effects of the LASEK surgery:
However, severe contraindications in LASEK are less frequent than that in the PRK technique. A better vision correction and a suitable laser surgical method always depend on the anatomical factors of the eyes for respective patients. So, before selecting the type of laser refractive surgery, it is always advised to go through a rigorous pre operative consultation with refractive surgeons. |
